Brush 5720

Brush 5720 was a retired military Dodge field ambulance. The department purchased the truck in 1990 and rebuilt it to be able to fight brush fires. Multiple department personnel worked on building the truck. The truck had a unique paint scene as it was painted Yellow and had the departments old custom logo.

Brush 5721 and 5723

Brush 5721 and 5723 are two retired brush trucks that were in service until around 2017. These two trucks were US Military surplus that SHVFD outfitted after their purchase. They were extremely useful in the soft sugar sand that makes up a lot of the area. both trucks were given nicknames due to either a gremlin that was found or the color. 5721 was known as “Pinky” due to the fading of the paint, and 5723 was know as “Blinky” due to an electrical gremlin that would cause the lights to slowly pulse.

(Prior to being a line firefighter I used to perform a lot of the maintenance duties on these two trucks. It has given me an appreciation for non computerized engines, and the hatred of the amount of engine belts that were thrown.)

Brush 5722

Old Brush 5722 was a retired US Army truck that was repurposed as a brush truck for Sand Hills VFD. Brush 5722 was in service for several years until being replaced.

Rescue 5741

Rescue 5741 is another ex-military truck that was purchased and remodeled into what it looks like now. The truck was only in service for a short time unfortunately due to the entire front suspension and drive assembly becoming unstable and making it too dangerous to drive. Ultimately it was decided to replace 5741 with the current 5722.

Engine 5717 v1

Engine 5717 V1 is a 1979 Chevy/ American LaFrance Pumper that was purchased in June of 1998. The engine stayed in service for several years until the 1980s Seagrave pumper was purchased.

Engine 5717 v2

I commonly refer to this engine as Engine 5717 version 2 because it is the second apparatus to use the 17 number. Engine 17v2 was an open cab 1980s Seagrave engine that was the departments primary engine for several years. once the department purchased Engine 17v3 this engine was sold to Corvette Corrections.

Engine 5717 v3

Engine 5717 v3 was the second engine that was given the 5717 apparatus ID number. The engine was a retired USAF fire engine built by KME. It was a closed cab engine that seated five and was used as the primary response engine. Unfortunately the fire engine was taken out of service after a rollover accident on Hwy 123 responding to a MVA in early morning fog. Fortunately the firefighter driving survived with out any injuries.

Engine 5715

Engine 5715 was a Pumper that built on an International Chassis. Engine 15 had been in service for several years before being sold due to mechanical issues.

Tanker 5730

Tanker 5730 was a 1957 GMC custom built tanker that was purchased and utilized as a mobile hydrant for the department. 5730 had a 500 gpm pump and a 1000 gallon tank. The department used this truck for several years until retiring it from active service.
